Halloween Playlist

Looking for some new songs to add to your Halloween playlist?  Here are some suggestions to spice up your playlist.

All links open in iTunes - The Dance Buzz is an iTunes affiliate

Tap

Superstition - Stevie Wonder - classic with a moderate tempo

Love Potion No. 9 - The Clovers

Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

Devil With the Blue Dress On - Mitch Ryder - keeps those toes a-tapping

Headless Horseman - Kay Starr - tells the story of the Headless Horseman in a cheery sort of way

Little Demon - Screamin' Jay Hawkins- a fun 50's rock-sounding tune

Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical

Howl - Florence + The Machine

I Put a Spell On You - From "Hocus Pocus" soundtrack, or Nina Simone, and the cover by She & Him is particularly haunting

Howlin' for You - The Black Keys - we've been using this for across the floor combinations in my jazz classes this week - works good for turns and battements

Strange and Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell on You) - Aqualung - a melancholy melody in 3/4 time

Other Fun Songs

Dinner With Drac, Pt 1 - John Zacherle

What's A Girl To Do - Bat For Lashes - basically the plot to Twilight summed up in a song

Grim Grinning Ghosts Remix - (link opens to YouTube - couldn't find a link) could maybe use this for hip hop?

And of course, you have to add The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) - Ylvis just for fun!

Why Dance Matters

As we are coming up on National Dance Day (July 28, 2012), Nichelle at Dance Advantage has posted the question: "Why does dance matter to you?"  In fact, she's trying to start a whole movement (dance pun intended) of the online dance community to share Why Dance Matters.  If you want to get involved, check it out at whydancematters.org, tweet #whydancematters to you or follow our Pinterest board (you know I love a good Pinterest board)!

So here's why dance matters to me:

It's my job.

But more than that, it's my passion.

No, it's still more than that... it's who I am.

From: http://youknowyoureadancerwhen.tumblr.com/tagged/wordsofdancers

You would not be able to describe me without talking about dance.

It's a link between my past and my present.

It's what I do when my soul needs mending.

It's the joy that I want to share with my students and friends.

It's a universal expression of joy and love and emotions.

It has created a community of people in my life whom I love and who I feel like I've known my whole life (online and offline).

It's wordless communication.

Dance is part of me.

Join the project and share why dance matters to YOU!

The Dance Things I Love...

In no particular order, the dance things I love:

When my littles rush into class because they can't wait one more second to start dancing

Opening up the first costume shipping box of the season

The hush of the audience as the lights go down in the theater

Celebrating the small accomplishments

Warm-up camaraderie before a performance

Turns in tap shoes (picture is Ruby Keeler)

Combinations with pirouettes on the right side

Taking a master class and being a student again

By the end of the year, how each class feels like its own little family

The buzz backstage at a performance

Frappes

Clean mirrors

The moment before you step on stage from the wings

Perfectly worn-in shoes

Getting lost in the movement

Love Playlists for Jazz & Hip Hop

Rainbow SpiritAnd we have come upon our last Valentine's playlist!  Click here for previous weeks (tap, children, lyrical).

This week's playlist is everything else I found that didn't fit under certain heading - mostly for jazz or hip hop, with a little classical ballet mixed in at the end!

I hope you've enjoyed this little series... have a great Valentine's Day!
